Firefox 3 has come up this week and you can set which application that open for mailto object, and the best thing is you can set Gmail web based to open when you click an email address (mailto) on website. Not only Firefox 3 actually this feature is already integrated in Opera as well. Okay… enough with the explaination, lets get on to How To set it up;

Opera:

1) In Tools > Preferences > Advanced > Programs, select ‘mailto‘ and press ‘Edit‘. Then use the command lines below to put in the ‘Other application’ field:

 opera "http://mail.google.com/mail/?view=cm&fs=1&to=%t&su=%s&body=%m&cc=%c&bcc=%b&ui=1"

Note: for Opera 9.5, you need to enter the URL parameter in the parameter field.

Firefox 3:
1) Go to Gmail and sign in.

2) While in Gmail, copy and paste the following into your browser’s address bar and hit enter.

javascript:window.navigator.registerProtocolHandler("mailto","https://mail.google.com/mail/?extsrc=mailto&url=%s","Gmail")

Google Apps users can use this code (but be sure to replace yourdomain.com with your Google Apps domain name):

javascript:window.navigator.registerProtocolHandler("mailto","https://mail.google.com/a/yourdomain.com/mail/?extsrc=mailto&url=%s","Gmail")

3) Click “Add Application” when you are prompted1 Congrats, you just added Gmail to your browser’s list of mail clients.

4) To set Gmail as your default, click on this link and you will be prompted with a dialog box listing available email applications. By selecting Gmail and checking “Remember my choice for mailto links” you won’t have to tell your browser again. (You don’t actually need to send an email after you click that link.)

5) You can always change this setting by going into “Tools” > “Options” (or “Firefox” > “Preferences,” for Mac users) selecting “Applications” and going to the “mailto” option. There’s a drop down next to the option that lets you change your default. Clicking “Application details” will take you to a settings page where you can completely remove Gmail or other mail apps.

Which Internet Web Browser That Run Small Memory?

Have you ever compare between web browser and see which browser that have the smallest memory usage for their operation?

Recently I reinstall new windows on my desktop and I try to test between 4 web browser (IE 7, Fire Fox, Opera and Safari) to see which browser that run the smallest memory,  so this way I can set which one is my default browser.

so how do I test them?

1.  I install four browser freshly without any add-ons or plugins.
2.  I put the same load for each browser
3.  Monitor the memory change

Testing Environment on Windows XP with the latest update.

And heres the result:

Opera has the lowest memory usage followed by Internet Explorer 7, Safari and Firefox.

I already have a feeling that opera will be the light one as I feel it when I use it, but I was surprise to see that firefox have the biggest memory usage than all 3 browser, and the different is huge its like around 30,000 K different, I thought that IE is the one who use the highest memory, but not.  So now I set Opera as my default browser, even tough I still use all those 3 browser to check my web design layout.
