Choose your Security Mode When using Gmail July 30
Google really Concern about the security and they now making it even easier for us to use https to protect your mail every time you access it. They’ve added an option to Settings to always use https. If you don’t regularly log in via unencrypted wireless connections at coffee shops or airports or college dorms, then you might not need this additional layer of security. But if you want to always use https, then this setting makes it really easy. Whenever you forget to type https://mail.google.com, they’ll add the https for you.
If you already have the https URL bookmarked, using this setting will ensure you access your account via https even when you don’t use your bookmark. Any http link to Gmail (for example, the one at the top of Google.com) will be automatically redirected to https. Nice isn’t?

So I;m confused does it make it more safe to turn that feature on or off? And how does it make it safer?

UTAH: well that give us a freedom to choose to use it all the time or not, but they still always use it when you sign in, to transmit the username and password.

Very useful option indeed. We should use this whenever we are not accessing mail from home.
