Finding Purpose Through Action

In more ways than one, Joseph McClendon III has fulfilled his long-time ambition to be on stage performing in front of thousands of people. Whereas his former dream was to play music for adoring fans, Joseph now helps make people realize the importance of finding true fulfillment in life.

Joseph, the Head Trainer for Robbins Research International, has been leading a portion of Tony’s Unleash the Power Within weekend seminar for years. But it was a series of decisions made in his life’s key defining moments that have contributed to Joseph’s never-ending drive to pay forward a precious gift given to him when he was down and almost out.

Just before his 19th birthday, Joseph was homeless and hungry, possessing nothing but the clothes on his back and just enough gas money to ride his 1937 Harley Davidson motorcycle to see his mother in Ridgecrest, Calif.

“I was close to suicidal on the way home from visiting her,” recalls Joseph. “She asked me if I was doing okay, and I lied to her. The only thing that kept me from running head on into somebody with my motorcycle was the fact I thought that I would hurt them, but I considered it.”

Thinking that things couldn’t get any worse, a retread from a truck in front of him blew out and flew into him, forcing Joseph to take a tumble into the desert. Scarred and in pain, he pushed his bike the remaining 10 miles back to his cardboard shack in Lancaster. Like a protagonist in a hard-luck movie moment, he was soon soaked in pouring rain.

Yelling and screaming to no one in particular, Joseph swore that everything was going to be different. The one true defining moment of his life occurred the next morning on his 19th birthday. He pushed the bike to a local garage and begged the mechanic to fix it in return for cleaning the shop. The mechanic said no, but Joseph was persistent.

Finally, the mechanic agreed to fix the bike, gave Joseph some clothes, and made what would be an unusual request even in that situation. The mechanic would not start working on the bike until Joseph read a book, that day, cover to cover. It was Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich.

“That was the genesis of three different things for me and my life,” said Joseph. “I realized that I was in control of my own life; I can do something about what others thought of me; and I could do something about attracting into my life what I wanted. That began to change everything for me.”

Things got better for Joseph after just a few months. He went back to the mechanic to tell him how much he changed his life, and to see if there was a way to pay him back. The mechanic’s request for repayment was simple: ‘I charge you with doing what I’ve done for you for as many people as possible.’

Although Joseph took his pledge to heart, it would be another decade before the next defining moment would shift his life radically. Hoping to make enough money to pursue his dream of being a full-time musician, Joseph attended real estate guru Robert Allen’s “Nothing Down” seminar in 1984.

He borrowed some money and was able to buy a few homes that he was planning to re-sell for a profit. He ended up $2.3 million in debt until his houses were sold off. Arriving to his job as a dental assistant in terrible shape one morning, a friend told him about a Tony Robbins seminar in L.A.

“This was 1985,” Joseph continued. “I did not know Tony Robbins. Hardly anybody knew him. I told my friend that I did not want to go to another seminar. I had already been to a seminar and look at the trouble that I was in.”

Nonetheless, Joseph soon found himself in a room with 400 strangers. Skeptical, Joseph stood in the back of the room and passively observed until a staff member approached him.

“He started talking to me and said this guy Tony is really going to help me out,” Joseph said. “I remember thinking in that moment, ‘Whoever this guy Tony is, he’s doing what I wanted to, and that’s to help a lot of people, but I’ve got to help myself first.’ ”

Before he left, the staff member asked for Joseph’s number to keep in touch and rushed off. Minutes later, the same “staff member” that had just introduced himself to Joseph was introduced to the audience as Tony Robbins.

Shortly thereafter, Joseph finally quit his job and pursued his music career as a paid studio musician while earning trainer certification at Tony’s company, Robbins Research International. He was also able to sell off his real estate with about $90,000 in profit. By 1990, he received a record deal from Sony records, finally achieving his long-time ambition.

But the celebration was short-lived, as he soon found himself without representation and locked into a contract that would not allow him to record or play without Sony’s consent. Just as soon as his music career was about to take off, it was shelved.

“I told Tony that I felt like my life’s purpose had been totally derailed,” said Joseph. “He said, ‘Sometimes when you don’t reach your dream, you get your destiny.’ I remember when he said that, something went off within me, and it wasn’t pleasant. I didn’t want to hear that. I wanted answers on how I was going to make this music thing work.”

But as Joseph asked himself what his destiny was, he remembered his promise to the mechanic that helped change his life.

By 1992, Tony’s impact in the coaching industry started to pick up, and as a certified trainer at many of Tony’s events, Joseph found himself fulfilling his pledge. His faith and commitment to his life’s purpose only confirmed that he was indeed following his true destiny.

Joseph’s example inspires everyone he touches to realize that, though life can deliver unexpected blows as well as pleasant surprises, we can always find the deeper meaning behind our life’s events, and if we’re really paying attention, we might find perhaps the most important things that really matter to every one of us.

This is my life’s purpose,” said Joseph. “I couldn’t be happier.
