Often people do all the appropriate work to land an interview - the research, the great attention-grabbing cover letter and resume but then they risk failure by lack of thought.

Careless words can lose you the job.

Before you send off any applications. When you’re considering applying for jobs and before you contact any recruitment consultants, consider both your e-mail address and your voice mail message.

What do they say about you? I have been very put off and sometimes I’ve not actually contacted an applicant because of their e-mail address and/or voice mail message or even the voice I heard on the voice mail when I called to ask them for interview. If it’s a cute or fun e-mail address or voice mail message or if the message is in Mickey Mouse’s voice - beware. One time I heard.

“Hi, we’re either having a party and can’t hear the phone or we can’t be bothered answering right now so just leave us a message.”

I didn’t leave a message and I crossed them off the list. Also an e-mail address such as “lazydave@hotmail” doesn’t give the right message either. It’s worth setting up a new e-mail address which is exclusively for your job search. Keep it simple and “gimmick-free“.
