The big news in ripping and burning this year is the collapse of copy protection in Blu-ray and HD DVD movies. With free software available on the Internet, it’s now possible to make backups of these HD high definition movies onto your hard drive.

While completely illegal, it hasn’t stopped some hackers already uploading HD DVD movies onto BitTorrent sites on the web for anyone to download. While it’s not quite as simple (yet) as DVD ripping, ripping HD DVD and Blu-ray discs requires the input of a special key for each disc, although that can now be found easily on the internet where there are dedicated Web pages keeping track of the latest keys as they’re discovered.

The AACS licensing authority may think AACS hasn’t been totally cracked, but if the HD DVD and Blu-ray movies, it was supposed to be protecting are ending up on the internet., it doesn’t sound like much of protection system to us.

Well besides the ending up on the internet part ;) this isn’t actually illegal. It’s in fact perfectly legal to make “backup copies” as you mentioned above of your media that you’ve purchased. I’ve also been discussing this on hd video forum.
