If you want to build multimedia server like home theater servers, where audio and video files are stored in a central location for access by anyone in the home, then you should try few of the FREE software tools.
If you are building a system based on windos XP Service pack 2 then you can use MediaPortal (www.team-mediaportal.com). It has a very similar look to Windows Media Center, but without cost
. It works with analog and digital TV tuners cards. For more media server focus try FreeNAS (www.freenas.org) a free Linux based distro that turns your PC into dedicated network-attached storage device, accessible to whoever you wish. It costs nothing and is an ideal way to use your old PC past their prime for frontline everyday use.

When you see video streams on the web most of them are not allow to download that video, However there’s a freeware tool called SDP multimedia (http://sdp.ppona.com) which can download video streams that conforms to Microsoft Media Server (MMS) format.
To use it ,start up SDP Multimedia, click the Open button, copy the video stream link to the entry panel (often an ASX or WMV link) click OK and then Go button. You’ll be asked for a save location for the file and once you’ve completed that, the video stream will begin downloading.
