Setting Yourself Apart After the Interview By: Jon Cappadona 2007
Why send an E-mail, when you can send a ME-mail?
Let me start by setting up the scene. Your interview went fantastic! The research you did on the company was well worth the time and effort. All questions were answered properly and with confidence. The clothes you were wearing looked great. In your heart, you know you “nailed” this interview. Now, it’s time to shake hands and trade the obligatory “thanks you” and “I look forwards”. he parting statement from your interviewer went something like this. “It was a pleasure meeting you. I have several more candidates to interview before we can make a decision. I will be in touch as soon as possible to let you know”. As you walk away you find yourself going over that last statement. He said “it was a pleasure meeting you.” It sure must have been because you know you nailed that interview!
But wait.
What else did he say? Did he say he has “several more interviews”!
Could it be? Oh no, competition! Insecurity starts to creep in.
But listen, it’s only natural. You’re human. You have feelings. Maybe it’s just what “they” say. Yup, that’s it. It’s standard “interviewer operating procedure”. There’s really nothing to worry about. You immediately start to feel better. You did nail that interview! That internal confidence meter of yours starts to rise. Your posture straightens up. There’s a newfound quickness in your step. Everything is bright again. Then, just as quickly as your spirits rise, a sinking feeling comes over you. As you walk through the reception area on your way out, you see several similarly dressed people waiting.
Yes, they’re waiting to interview for “your job”.
You knew it wasn’t just standard interviewer operating procedure! The company that you want to work for more than anything in the world really does have more interviews!
This very common scenario plays out in companies (and in people’s minds) thousands of times a day. New grads on the hunt for their first real job experience it. Even more seasoned career-seekers looking for a change have to face it. They all did their best to stand out during the interview process. Now, they must do something to stand out after it!
When a follow-up is more than just a follow-up.
Job Seeking 101 teaches us all to follow-up with a “thank you” of course. But, everyone knows that! You need something else. That competitive edge that will set you apart from the other “suits” and get you remembered. Do you send flowers or candy? A cute little gift maybe? No, that’s way too solicitous. Most companies today have rules against that anyway.
Stand out by sending an e-card!
Delivered via standard e-mail, e-cards use bright, action-packed animations that come in all shapes and forms. Some are funny and some are clever. Most are customizable to better help get your message across. In this case, your heartfelt “thank you”. An animated e-card is sure to stand out better than a regular e-mail. And, best of all, most e-card sites are free!
There are many of e-card sites to choose from. Each offers its own style of cards, sometimes numbering into the hundreds. I have found that BLUE MOUNTAIN ARTS, one of the original online e-card companies, offers the largest number of cards. They offer several cards for free. If you want to use their better “premium” cards, they charge a yearly subscription rate of $14.00. They offer cards for a wide range of categories
including Thank You.
MUSHYGUSHY.com is an interesting new site which lets you star in your own e-cards by popping your own head (and others) directly into the animations. They actually refer to their e-cards as ME-cards because of this highly personalized feature. They give you an easy-to-use tool to cut a head out of any picture you have on your computer and pop it
into any one of their animated e-cards.
Another nice feature of this site is the user’s ability to save prepared heads with matching gender and body skin-tones. This unique feature makes all of MushyGushy’s e-cards suitable to all genders and people of all color. They are probably the next best thing to and actual face-to-face (which they actually kind are in an internet sort of way). All cards on MushyGushy.com are free.
A third site to look into is HALLMARK.com. Though they mainly use their site to promote printable cards and the merchandise they sell in their stores nationwide, they do have a large selection of free e-cards to try. Their cards tend to be more on the warm and fuzzy side, though some will make an adequate Thank You.
Make sure you always ask for a card from whomever you meet and interview with. This will assure you of their proper e-mail address.
I lived through several of the scenarios above, until I landed my first full time job after college. And by the way, on my first day at work the Hiring Manager for my Department mentioned how much he enjoyed my personalized e-card. Now it’s up to me to keep standing out throughout the rest of my career.
