Why they can’t land the job they SAY they want so badly February 28
I got this newsletter from Jimmy Sweeney The Author of Amazing Cover Letter it was interesting and motivated for those of you who are seeking a job NOW!, enjoy this reading as Jimmy Permit this to be shared.
I hear so many excuses from job-seekers telling me *why*
they “can’t” land the job they SAY they want so badly.“I’m too old”
“I’m too young”
“I’m not experienced enough”
“I’m over qualified”
“I’m too fat”
“I’m too skinny”Enough already! Excuses are like noses, we all have one and they all smell. ;o)
The following story is from an amazing cover letters customer of mine who landed another job interview and finally turned her negative (”I’m too old”) into a positive.
When I read her first email, she was so sincere and sweet that I couldn’t resist helping her out.
We can all learn from Bernadette’s story…
Dear Jimmy,
This is an update since your email in response to one I sent you in which I expressed concerns that because I am 56 years old, I was of the strong opinion that I was not being offered a job because prospective employers were basing their decision on my age instead of focusing on my education, skills and experience
I had taken some time off from job hunting after more than 6 interviews and no signs of a ‘welcome mat.’ After a few weeks, I entered the job hunt again. I arrived at my interview with determination and purpose, walking briskly, shoulders back, and eyes focused. The interview went very well, which had been the case in previous interviews and bearing that in mind, I gave the “Jimmy spiel”…
“…I think the fact that I am mature, with all the experience of working in so many situations with a variety of people, coupled with my work ethic, reliability and the fact that I enjoy what I do, make my age a definite plus for your company. I would love the opportunity to show you how valuable I can be to your organization”.
I was hired on the spot and did an imaginary high-five to you on my way out the door.
Thank you Jimmy for your support and encouragement. Please tell all the older folks out there who are feeling insecure after failed attempts at securing jobs that there is ‘job life’ after 56 and to hold on to the knowledge that there are employers who will see past their age and value them for their experience and skills.
Kindest regards
Bernadette
The key paragraph to take away from this story:
“…I think the fact that I am mature, with all the experience of working in so many situations with a variety of people, coupled with my work ethic, reliability and the fact that I enjoy what I do, make my age a definite plus for your company. I would love the opportunity to show you how valuable I can be to your organization”.
Talk about turning a perceived negative into a BIG positive!
Now get out there and turn YOUR “I’m too…” into a strength that makes the employer say, “You know something, I like you, you’re hired!”
